Our waters are not covered by ice every year. Thus Ice Sailing is a sport which can not be performed every year. With the ongoing warming of the earth the periods of Ice Sailing are getting shorter and shorter.
The Ice Sailing was first mentioned about 100 years ago. Fishermen immigrating from Pomerania introduced a special kind of fishing on ice (fishing below the ice covered surface) in this area. For transporting their catch they used sledges. The sledges were not trimmed for speed they were trimmed for the transport of heavy goods.
Nowadays two different kinds of Ice Sailing can be seen; the traditional and the modern way. Sailing the traditional way the sledge owner tries to maintain the sledge using original materials. What a modern high speed ice sledge looks like should be well known.
The presented model (the sledge) has about 100 years old skids. The top (the boat casco) was built in the early 1950's. Also part of the rig is new (the old one was corroded). All other parts, like sails, are being kept in their original state, if feasible .
